Trend Alert: We’ve NAILed It!

Cliché yet fabulous, as the weather turns warmer and the sun beams brighter, so does the color of our nails!  Nothing screams flirty, feminine and fabulous quite like a peachy neutral, or a soft pink polish with a glossy top coat.  CND Co-founder and Style Director Jan Arnold predicted  “Ethereal, femme manicures in opaque porcelain, shimmery finishes… will be the ‘it’ look this spring,” and based on the spring 2011 runways, she’s exactly right!  Here are the hues I’ll be rocking this season:

For a peachy-perfect manicure, try CND’s limited edition Perfectly Bare Colour, a porcelain crème, and layer it with the limited-edition CND Perfectly Bare Shimmer Effect for a kiss of texture.

To achieve the “Halo Manicure,” as seen on the runway at Behnaz Sarafpour’s S/S ‘11 show, try CND Perfectly Bare Colour with CND Silver Chrome Colour edged along the perimeter for a mysterious, heavenly border.

At the Marc Jacobs and Marc by Marc Jacobs S/S ’11 shows, flawlessly fresh manicures were all the rage and were a result of Perfectly Bare Colour mixed with CND Super Matte Top Coat for a warm, satin matte finish. Ahhh, GORGEOUS!

BEST. FACIAL. EVER.

Jurlique LogoI spent the beginning of February in a state of denial.  My standard zit or two had erupted into a full-blown case of acne, and in one word, it was ghastly. By mid-month, I could endure no more and dashed (head down) to NYC’s Jurlique Spa, where they addressed the situation by providing me with my most blissful facial ever! Never have I left a facial so relaxed and assured that all of my problem areas had been tended to.  My esthetician and true skincare authority, Liz, had skillfully cleansed, extracted and massaged my way to complexion perfection.

Jurlique Spa

Reasons why I love Jurlique:
1.)    Prior to the facial, they ask how you’d like to be addressed during the service (i.e. only spoken to when problem areas are tackled, spoken to during every step, etc.).
2.)    They assess the state of your skin and provide you with the best facial for your needs.
3.)    They don’t try to shove their products down your throat!  Nothing’s worse than a sales staff pressuring you into buying yet another expensive face cream you don’t need.
4.)    Their newest line, ‘Purely White,’ promises to brighten and even skin tone in just 30 days!  Goodbye sunspots!!

Having a particularly bad skin month, or just need some TLC? Jurlique Spas are all over the country, so please, visit one near you!

NEW FAVORITE PRODUCT

I may have been preaching the miraculous ways of Cover Girl’s Lash Blast mascara for quite some time, but I think I may have found something to put Cover Girl’s most popular mascara to shame!

Always on the quest for the next best thing and sick of using my dried up tube of Lash Blast Fusion, I ventured over to Sephora and held a stake out next to the endcap adorned with Sephora’s best selling mascaras. I thought back to my days as a Sephora “cast member,” and remembered a fellow employee raving about Fresh Supernova mascara. I tested the product and made the purchase as quickly as it had taken for me to fall in love, about 30 seconds.

Fresh Supernova

Here are the reasons why I love it just so darn much:

1.) No more dry, unwanted spider lashes! The formula is incredibly glossy so lashes always looks soft and conditioned.

2.) If you don’t like drama, need not apply. The lengthening and volumizing effect is out of this world!

3.) Instant eye brightener. This is one of the darkest mascaras I’ve used and the jet-black color really intensifies eye color.

** I also found a cheaper alternative to my Holy Grail mascara primer, Lancome Cils Booster XL ($22), and that is Sephora “Tricks of the Trade” Perfecting Lash Primer ($14). It creates just as much intensity, but for $8 less!

Sephora Lash Primer

Let your lashes make a statement while making your eyes look bigger and incredibly brighter.  With all of the (undeserved) hoopla over YSL’s new Volume Effet Faux Cils Luxurious mascara and Dior’s DiorShow Black Out mascara, Fresh Supernova may be one of the beauty industry’s best-kept secrets!

The Recessionista and the Homemade Body Scrub

Fresh Brown Sugar Body Polish, 14 oz, $65

Gone are the days of spending a well-exfoliated arm and a leg on pricey body scrubs and cleansers! In this economic climate, how can one justify spending 65 dollars on a 14 oz pot of Fresh Brown Sugar Body Polish?  Don’t let the pretty packaging and lab-born chemicals fool you; these products are not more effective just because they can be found on the shelf at your local Sephora. In a matter of minutes and for less than a few dollars, you can have a homemade body scrub that is just as effective, 100% organic, and completely tailored to your needs. I know what you’re thinking, Ugh, but that’s so much work. Actually, it’s fun and super easy!

My fabulous homemade scrub- I'll never go store-bought again!

I recently made an incredible peppermint sugar body scrub with a multitude of features and benefits.  It completely sloughs off dead skin while exuding an invigorating peppermint aroma, and the peppermint oil used provides a refreshing cooling effect. I selected the best ingredients for my dry, dull skin that hasn’t seen the light of day since summer, and got to work whipping together the following ingredients:

White granulated sugar- a great exfoliant that is not too rough on skin and dissolves with heat so it won’t clog your shower drain
Plain yogurt- softens and moisturizes
Olive oil- softens and moisturizes
Peppermint essential oil- provides an invigorating scent with a unique cooling sensation (Choose an essential oil that you love and you’ll never pay for a store-bought scrub again.  I stocked up on essential oils during a sale at the Body Shop so I can go from a calming lavender to a musky vanilla.)

Depending on your needs and preferences, you can use just about any ingredient you desire.  Here are some other skin-softening ingredients for a sensational scrub of your own:

Salt- inexpensive, has muscle-relaxing properties
Brown sugar- gentle on skin, nicely scented
Coffee (grounded)- can minimize the formation and appearance of dreaded cellulite and varicose veins
Flowers/herbs- several herbs and flowers have unique healing properties (ex. use lavender for relaxation or ginseng for an added boost of energy)

And what’s great is that for a few minutes and a couple of dollars, you can provide a friend with a custom-made gift they’ll truly appreciate. Go to your local crafts or home store and purchase a pretty glass bottle and some ribbon, and you’re all set!
What means more than a homemade gift?

From Runway to Reality: Spring 2010 Beauty Trends

Bryant Park
Lips were of peach perfection at Michael Kors
Peachy perfection at Michael Kors

The tents at Bryant Park have been dismantled and Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week has come to a close, but my mind continues to spin with the parade of beautiful faces displayed on the runway. As always, the sky was the limit with beauty and the looks were extensive. From Madewell’s “no makeup” look, to Thakoon’s exaggerated brow, a favorite pastime of mine is to examine theatrical runway-ready looks and transform them into wearable trends appropriate for the events of everyday life. This time around, it was the lips I just couldn’t shut up about!

YSL Rouge Volupté in Faubourg Peach
YSL Rouge Volupté in Faubourg Peach

One runway trend I loved for its simplistic elegance and universally flattering appeal is the peach lip. An array of designers, such as Vivienne Tam and Nanette Lepore, adorned their models with a soft peach pout that enhanced all skin tones while providing a subtle yet wondrous burst of color. This is one trend that will certainly add to the splendor of springtime. To replicate this look, I used Rimmel London‘s Lasting Finish Intense Wear Lipstick in Crush, which bestowed a beautiful wash of peach while brightening and intensifying my complexion. I also love YSL Rouge Volupté in Faubourg Peach for its creamy texture and glossy sheen. For times when my passion for peach is particularly potent, I use Rimmel London’s Crush and apply Revlon’s Crème Gloss in Peachy Sheen on top. The outcome is high in gloss, color, and sex appeal. This will definitely be one of my go-to looks for this spring.

Bold red lips were a key element of the look at Vena Cava
Face Chart for Vena Cava

Another trend that many people find alluring, yet frighteningly complex, is the bold lip that was seen at Proenza Schouler and Vena Cava, among other shows. Whether for a day at the office or a night of intense bar-hopping, no one should be scared to experiment with a little color on their artistic palettes (that’s right, your face is a palette!) If you’re a little color-shy at first, a great way to come out of your shell is to up the intensity of your lip color a tiny bit every day. If you want to wear a red lip with

Stila Lip Glaze in Cranberry

confidence, start with a gloss, such as Stila Lip Glaze in Cranberry (one of my all time favorites). Only apply to the center of your lips and use your fingers to blend it out to the edges. The next time, apply to the whole lip (if you’re still not comfortable, feel free to blot after application). Once you’re able to confidently walk out of the house with a glossy red lip, try a more matte lipstick. I love NARS Shanghai Express because it has a ribbon of black pigment that runs through the tube to make it flattering for all skin tones. To apply an intense red or dark lipstick, it is important to stay inside the lines and to make sure the color doesn’t bleed or budge. To do so, apply a lip primer, such as Urban Decay’s Lip Primer Potion, and a thin rim of loose powder around the lips with a Qtip. Then line and fill in your lips with a lip liner that is the same color as your lipstick, or nude. Using a lip brush, apply the lipstick within the lines, blot with a tissue to set the color, and reapply. And there you have it, a sexy pout that can brighten your complexion and make your teeth look instantly whiter! Be sure to leave all else natural to really let your lips do the talking 😉

Stay tuned for more favorites from the runway at Bryant Park!

Winter Wonder-glam’d!

Every year, the holidays inspire me to experiment with what I’ve dubbed the “Snow Bunny” look.  Shimmer, sparkles, beautiful baby pinks and an overall glow that can turn any plain Jane into a knockout beauty.  After years of experimentation, I’ve finally mastered it.

Too Faced blush in Pink Provocateur

Start with a foundation primer, as an even, beautiful skin tone is key.  After the primer has dried, apply foundation and under eye concealer.  For excellent under eye coverage and highlighting, try YSL’s Touche Eclat (but remember, your ring finger should be your application tool of choice, as it is most gentle on such thin, wrinkle-prone skin.)  Apply concealer over blemishes and use a big, fluffy brush to apply loose powder.  Loose powder will provide a flawless finish that will last all day. Buff away the excess powder by moving your brush in small, circular motions, and apply bronzer in a backwards “3” motion so that your temples, cheekbones, and jaw line appear sun kissed.  Take a beautiful bubblegum-pink blush and apply it to the apples of your cheeks (a personal favorite of mine is Too Faced Pink Provocateur) and use a shimmery white or pearlescent pink highlighter on your cheekbones.  NARS multiple sticks in Copacabana and Luxor are great highlighters.  To use them, transfer a little bit of product onto your fingertips and rub on to your cheekbones from the apples of your cheeks towards your ears.  Highlighter will make a tremendous difference! Once your complexion is complete, it’s time for the eyes.

To increase the life of your “snow bunny” look, apply a white or gold shimmery cream shadow from lash line to crease. Then use a shimmery white powder shadow, such as Stila’s Moonlight, and apply it from lash line to a little above your crease so that when your eye is open, the shadow can be seen above the lid.  To add depth, use a light brown shadow in the crease and on the outer 1/3 of your lid.  Apply a thin line of brown liner to the upper and lower lash lines and use a white eyeliner, such as NARS Eye Liner Pencil in Iceberg, in the water line of your lower lash line.  Then take a shimmery white shadow, such as the one you used on your lid, and apply it with more intensity to the inner corners of your eye, blending it towards the bridge of your nose, on to your lid, and below your lower lash line.  Curl your lashes and apply a few coats of black mascara- your eyes will be stunning!

To finish off the look, pink lip gloss is essential. My personal favorites are YSL Pur Gloss in Pure Rose for olive skin tones, NARS Turkish Delight for lighter skin tones, or Benefit Lady’s Choice, which is beautiful on all tones.

Now go brave the cold and show off that snow bunny glow 😉
